My Story
Back in 2009, we were simply two mums trying to find something that didn’t seem to exist. Somewhere our disabled children – and others like them – could go to have fun, make friends and just be themselves.
We couldn’t find it…so we created it and to say it was a challenge would be an understatement!
Almost 17 years later Unique Kidz and Co supports children and young adults with disabilities and their families from across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. It’s grown into something we could never have imagined back then — but at its heart, it's values have remained the same. It’s a special place, a place to be Unique.
I’m Jane, Connie’s mum, who has Rett Syndrome. And Denise, the other co-founder, has two sons with autism and learning disabilities. We know first-hand the challenges and the joys that comes with raising young people with disabilities.
And then we also have Susan… she’s been there through it all as Connie’s aunty. Part of the family, part of the journey, and now part of this challenge too.
The first week of July we are off to Iceland , the three of us are taking part in the Icelandic Fire & Ice Trek - it's going to be tough! Some would say a once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
Why? Because we still believe in creating opportunities and helping to make a difference. Every step we take is for the young people that come to Unique Kidz - for the friendships they build, for the confidence they gain, for the families who need that safe, trusted space. We know first-hand how important this support is — because we live it everyday.

Home to some of Europe’s most incredible landscapes, the Iceland Lava Trek takes in thundering waterfalls, steaming lava fields, plunging fjords and spouting geysers. Crossing the phenomenal Landmannalaugar, the route is through one of the most actively volcanic and alien landscapes in Iceland, provding awe-inspiring views at every step.The duration may be short, but the days are long and the terrain is very challenging, with steep climbs and rough descents. In addition to all this we will also be in charge of setting up and breaking down camp, making this a truly tough challenge.
